By filing a complaint against your contractor, you allow the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) to document the case and record information in the contractor’s file. Your complaint will be reviewed. In some cases the RBQ may contact the contractor if, for example, the safety of building residents is at risk or the contractor has been dishonest.
If you are in a contract dispute with your contractor because, for example, you’re dissatisfied with the work done, you can start legal proceedings. Visit the Problems with your contractor page for more information.
The RBQ is not a court and therefore has no power to resolve your dispute.
Before filing a complaint about the services provided by your contractor, you must:
To file a complaint that will allow the RBQ to record information in the contractor’s file, you must have a written contract or other document that establishes a relationship between you and the contractor. It may take different forms, but it must allow the RBQ to identify the contractor clearly (email, bid, proof of payment, etc.).
If you don’t have a written contract establishing a relationship between you and the contractor, your complaint is not admissible. The RBQ will not be able to enter any information about the complaint in the contractor’s file. However, you can take your case to a court in the Québec legal system, such as the Small Claims Court.
