Specialized contractor’s licence

The RBQ informs you that a specialized contractor’s licence is required to carry out or have carried out work included in Schedules II and III to the Regulation. This class of licence is required for any contractor whose main activity consists in carrying out or having carried out construction work in one of the 49 subclasses shown in Schedules II and III [PDF, 113 KB] to the Regulation respecting the professional qualification of contractors and owner-builders.

What does a specialized contractor’s licence allow you to do?

A specialized contractor may carry out or have carried out work included in his licence subclasses in any of the situations below, regardless of the type of building, installation or work involved.

A specialized contractor may:

  • Subcontract for a general contractor or an owner-builder.
  • Subcontract for a specialized contractor holding the same subclass or another subclass (usually to do related work).
  • Enter into contracts covering demolition work he is authorized to do. For example, a masonry structures contractor is allowed to carry out a contract for the demolition of a masonry outer wall.
  • Enter into a contract with a natural person who wants to do construction work on a single-family home or work intended for his personal use or that of his family. In this case, the natural person acts as owner-builder and is exempted from holding a licence.

Remember

A general or specialized contractor can always bid on, carry out or have carried out a fraction of work that is normally included in his subclass, even if the work is not specifically included in the subclass description.
