Specialized contractor

Specialized contractor's licence – Subclasses

A specialized contractor's licence is required for any contractor whose main activity consists in carrying out, or having carried out, construction work in one of the 49 subclasses.

If you are unsure which subclass(es) are required for the work you are planning, consult the Schedule II and III of the List of Licence Subclasses – PDF (109 KB) or the Keyword index [Fr].

Schedule II – Specialized contractor

What a specialized contractor's licence allows you to do

A specialized contractor may carry out, or have carried out, work included in their licence subclass(es) in any of the situations below, regardless of the type of building, installation or work involved.

A specialized contractor may:

  • Subcontract for a general contractor or an owner-builder.
  • Subcontract for a specialized contractor who holds the same or a different licence subclass (usually to do related work).
  • Enter into a contract for demolition work they are authorized to do. For example, a masonry structures contractor may carry out a contract for the demolition of a masonry outer wall.
  • Enter into a contract with a natural person who wants to do construction work on a single-family home or work intended for their own or their family's personal use. In this case, the natural person acts as owner-builder and is exempt from the requirement to hold a licence.

N.B.: A general or specialized contractor can always bid on, carry out or have carried out a fraction of the work that is normally included in their subclass, even if this work is not specifically included in the subclass definition.
