Amendments to the subclasses concerning heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems

The Regulation respecting the professional qualification of contractors and owner-builders is amended in order to adapt certain licence subclasses for work on apparatus that is part of heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems. These amendments will come into force on January 16, 2017. These changes focus on the obligation to hold all the appropriate subclasses to work on those apparatus. Contractors who already hold the appropriate subclasses don’t have to qualify again. More precisely, the amendments will allow

• contractors – heating systems, also members of the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ), to carry out any work on a heating system, including work that is not reserved exclusively for them, such as air distribution systems or control systems
• contractors – ventilation to carry out work relating to air circulation or distribution systems, such as the installation of apparatus used to heat a building
• contractors – heating, ventilation or refrigeration to carry out work relating to heating, ventilation and refrigeration apparatus, as long as they have the required qualifications.

15.1 Contractor – Pulsed air heating systems

Should you modify your licence?

In addition to subclass 15.1, a contractor who wishes to carry out construction work relating to heating and air conditioning apparatus that are part of pulsed air heating systems must hold the subclass 15.9 or 15.10. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the subclass 15.9 or 15.10, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:

15.1.1 Contractor – Pulsed air heating systems for certain work that is not reserved exclusively for master pipe-mechanics

Should you modify your licence?

In addition to subclass 15.1.1, a contractor must hold the subclass 15.9 or 15.10 if he wishes to carry out construction work relating to heating and air conditioning apparatus that are part of a pulsed air heating system on a local municipality’s territory with a population fewer than 5,000 inhabitant (unless there’s a common sewer), or on an unorganized territory. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the subclass 15.9 or 15.10, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:

15.4 Contractor – Hydronic heating systems

Should you modify your licence?

In addition to subclass 15.4, a contractor who wishes to carry out construction work relating to heating and air conditioning apparatus that are part of a hydronic heating system must hold the subclass 15.9 or 15.10. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the subclass 15.9 or 15.10, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:

• determine the appropriate subclass to obtain depending on the work you’re planning, and look into the definitions of 15.9 and 15.10

15.4.1 Contractor – Hydronic heating systems for certain work that is not reserved exclusively for master pipe-mechanics

15.7 Contractor – Residential ventilation

Should you modify your licence?

In addition to subclass 15.7, a contractor must hold the subclass 15.9 or 15.10 if he wishes to carry out construction work relating to apparatus used to heat and air-condition a pulsed air heating system for the following buildings: detached, semi-detached, and row-type single-family dwellings, and a multi-family building’s private portion held in divided co-ownership. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the subclass 15.9 or 15.10, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:

15.8 Contractor – Ventilation

In addition to subclass 15.8, a contractor who wishes to carry out construction work relating to apparatus used to heat and air-condition a pulsed air heating system must hold the subclass 15.9 or 15.10. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the subclass 15.9 or 15.10, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:

15.9 Contractor – Small refrigeration systems

Should you modify your licence?

In addition to subclass 15.9, a contractor must hold the subclass 15.4 or 15.4.1 if he wishes to carry out construction work relating to apparatus used to heat and air-condition a hydronic heating system with a capacity not exceeding 40 kilowatts and a refrigerant of group A1, A2 or a mixture of both, according to the classification in the table on refrigerants and charges of the Mechanical Refrigeration Code, CSA B-52, published by the Canadian Standards Association. Moreover, in addition to subclass 15.9, a contractor must hold the subclass 15.1, 15.1.1, 15.7 or 15.8 if he wishes to carry out construction work relating to apparatus used to heat and air-condition a pulsed air heating system with a capacity not exceeding 40 kilowatts and a refrigerant of group A1, A2 or a mixture of both, according to the classification in the table on refrigerants and charges of the Mechanical Refrigeration Code, CSA B-52, published by the Canadian Standards Association. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the appropriate subclasses, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:

15.10 Contractor – Refrigeration

Should you modify your licence?

In addition to subclass 15.10, a contractor must hold the subclass 15.4 or 15.4.1 if he wishes to carry out construction work relating to apparatus used to heat and air-condition a hydronic heating system. Moreover, in addition to subclass 15.10, a contractor must hold the subclass 15.1, 15.1.1, 15.7 or 15.8 if he wishes to carry out construction work relating to apparatus used to heat and air-condition a pulsed air heating system. Therefore, if you intend to carry out this type of work, and you’re not holding the appropriate subclasses, you must get the new qualifications required before January 16, 2017. You may:
