Update your file

If you are a contractor or an owner-builder, you must update your file with the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) as soon as there are changes in your enterprise, according to the Building Act. Failing to notify the RBQ of any changes may result in the suspension or the cancellation of your licence.

However, if your enterprise does not undergo changes, you don’t have to update your file.

Examples of changes

Here are examples of changes that may happen in your enterprise and for which you must notify the RBQ:

  • Changing the address, contact information or name of the enterprise
  • Adding or removing one or many legal names
  • Removing a category or subcategory from your licence
  • Adding, removing or changing a lender, an officer, a shareholder or a partner
  • Changing information in the mandatory declarations of the officers, shareholders or lenders

How to update your file

New: Forwarding address for your licence

Add a forwarding address to your RBQ file so you can receive all mail regarding your licence. See the Entreprise tab of your online file to add this contact information. 

Online

You can update it online by using the french service My Updated File. You will need:

Sole proprietorships without a NEQ will need their QST file registration number, their RBQ file number and their RBQ interlocutor number.

If your licence has been issued by the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ) or the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ), this service is not available. You need to update your file with your corporation.

By mail

Please note

Since May 1, 2017, the paper version of the prefilled update form is not sent by mail with the Notice of Assessment – Licence Maintenance anymore. If your enterprise undergoes changes, you must update your file online or print a blank form.

You can also send the RBQ one of these forms, completed and signed, depending on your company's legal status.

Details on the update during a business merger

In the event of a change of legal name following a business merger, you must fill out an update form to declare any new information, provide a security rider and a copy of the merger certificate. The company must also take the necessary steps with the manager of the Guarantee Plan for New Residential Buildings to make any corrections necessary to the new name.
